Being a simple soul at heart, I've just been going by red or green LEDs.
However a quick Google search suggests that you must never go lower than 3.0 v per cell to avoid cell damage and preferably never lower than 3.5 volts per cell.

Ah, we're a bit posh down here in Sussex. we have fancy digits to look at!
