Piston Tank - Depth Control (Paper by Wolfgang Baumann & Helmut Huhn) Empty Piston Tank - Depth Control (Paper by Wolfgang Baumann & Helmut Huhn)

    Post  david f Sat Aug 01, 2020 10:35 am

My thanks to Hein  (Heinrich Kistenich) for this excellent paper (In German and English) by  Messrs. Baumann and Huhn on the use of piston tanks for depth control. (I am afraid I have had problems posting the Excel diagram which accompanies the paper but you can download the whole paper (including the diagram)  from the "Files" section of the AMS Facebook site.)

Excel diagram with operating data of AKULA II
A model by Wolfgang Baumann, who also did the translation.
Scale 1:100, length: 110 cm, weight: 13,51 kg
Analysis by Helmut Huhn, May 2020 (current correction by David Forrest July 07, 2020)

The printout shows the 3 parameters piston travel (line 1) depth setpoint (line 2), and depth actual value (line 3) during a vertical trip in Fühlinger See (near cologne) on August 31, 2004.
Explanation of the attached diagram: static depth control of the model submarine AKULA II by Wolfgang Baumann. Wolfgang Baumann is an IT-professional. He made recordings in his submarine model during the use of the model. The evaluation was created with Microsoft Excel.
The purpose of this diagram is to show that the position control of the piston in the piston tank (WTC) does not have a PID regulation in the control unit, but is a simple voltage-proportional position control (P regulation) of the piston. The piston runs analogously to the output signal of the pressure sensor in a control window from 15 g of buoyancy to 15 g of underdrive according to the depth of the submarine.
There is no PID regulation and you can see how the actual depth Fig. 3 the setpoint step function     Fig. 2 and settles in. Fig. 3 is so thick because there is a little noise on the signal of the pressure sensor. The regulation window is located approximately in the middle of the balance point.
If the target depth is 96 cm, the downforce begins to decrease at 90 cm, the 15 g of water are pushed out at a depth of 96 cm the boat is now balanced, at a depth of 102 cm the boat has a buoyancy of 15 g again. The boat swings down, see M5 (M=measuring point) but due to the simplicity of the control concept this is negligible.
The actual piston tank position Fig.1: After approx. 7.2 s, Fig.2 jumps to a depth of 32 cm. With a max. capacity of 20 g/s, the piston tank turns 15 g of buoyancy into 15 g of downforce, see M1.
When the sinking boat has reached the lower control window level M2 (depth 32 – 6 = 26 cm), Fig.1 starts with the water output at 6.6 g/s (M3), and the boat has dipped through the window in 3.5 seconds (M4), the piston stops while the boat swings about 3.5 cm down (M5) due its inertial energy, but then it comes up. In Fig.1 the curve is now flatter and the piston tank drives more slowly against the up and down trend of the boat. The voltage swing of the pressure sensor in the control window corresponds to ± 6cm diving depth. This voltage swing is the setpoint for an amount of ± 15 g water input or output. The control loop does not see the entire setpoint or actual difference as in a normal PID regulation, but only the ± 6 cm water column around the setpoint.
On line 3, after about 4.5 minutes (M6), you can see a continuous stroke of the submarine of 2.2 cm peak to peak with an oscillation period of approx. 11 seconds. The piston is equipped with a low-friction Airzet sealing ring and a bell-type anchor motor from Maxon with cobalt samarium magnets. Helmut Huhn came up with the control circuit for the piston tank for his own boats, and Wolfgang Baumann took Helmut’s ideas for his AKULA II.
The weight adjustment of the boat caused by changed water temperature is made by moving the control window accurate to the gram (RC-transmitter: piston tank position channel 1 = changing the tank filling) with a rotary knob on a 1 – 100 scale ≙ 1-2 ms, ≙± 50 g.
In this diagram the control window has a value of 30 g piston stroke. This value can also be 40 g or 20 g. If you make it smaller, the boat barely goes through a water temperature jump, or a soft outer shell lets the boat sank to the ground. That is why the boats have an adjustable max-depth switch, that drives the piston tank empty.
The targeted wight change also shows water ingress accurate to the gram. If the boat has a residual buoyancy of 15 g on water surface, you know how much of the boat must look out of the water. Witch changing the position of RC-channel 1 (1 – 100 scale ≙ 1-2 ms, ≙± 50 g water) it is possible to move the control window accordingly water is pressed in or out of the piston tank.
The "Huhn circuit" has another special feature: Since the air pressure is constantly changing and this fact is not negligible for our purposes, the “Huhn circuits” have built in an air pressure change compensation. When the boat is switched on, a time-controlled relay also switches on a servomotor with attached potentiometer for approx. three seconds. This compensates the changed air pressure measuring to a start value of zero. Sometimes not exactly zero, but always smaller than 1 cm WS. (WS = Water column) The used sensor is an absolute pressure sensor. The sensor “sees” only the outside pressure, here the water pressure plus the current air pressure. The boats internal pressure, which can change due to the inner pressure, the piston stroke or the temperature, is not “seen”. A differential pressure sensor would not be able to ignore this.
The electrical presentation of the piston position is realized with a potentiometer, which does not see a rotary movement of the piston caused by different pressures on the water or the air side. The position detection via a number of revolutions of the motor takes over this error undetected.

The following paragraph describes Hein Kistenich’s boats, all of them are equipped with Huhn’s technique. Helmut Huhn has also developed additional, very special circuits for some boats.
Let us start with STINT, a Walter project from the 1960s. Since April 2004, the STINT model (built in 1996) has been equipped with Huhn’s technology. During the test phase, the regulation was used to measure the sink rate of the STINT with different negative buoyancy.
An excerpt from the original text dated July 20, 2004 follows in italics.
Today the sink rate of STINT was measured with different weights. For this purpose, a 90 cm long and 2 mm thick aluminum rod - marked every 10 cm in color - was installed on the tower. Helmut took over the floating adjustments. Like the Wolfgang Baumann’s diagram, he had made STINT float. In order to get the most precise result possible, we flooded the boat first by swinging the first 70 cm, only to measure the constant sink rate on the aluminum rod during the last 20 cm.
The following sink rates were determined:
    negative buoyancy  5 g 2.5 cm / s
    negative buoyancy 10 g 3.3 cm / s
    negative buoyancy 15 g 4.5 cm / s
    negative buoyancy 20 g 5,2 cm / s
After the values were noted, our mission was over. However, Wolfgang Baumann has already made such a measurement before us. All parameters are recorded in his AKULA II so that they can be evaluated on a PC afterwards. I saw such a diagram during a meeting in Kassel. It was very impressive. The amount of time it can record is around 104 minutes (depending on the size of the compact flash card). The measurement happens every 200ms with 82 different parameters.

STINT displaces almost 23 kg. Therefore, the downward acceleration is slower than with Wolfgang Baumann’s AKULA II with 13.51 kg. Regardless of the negative buoyancy weight used with STINT, the max. sink speed was always reached at the depth of 70 cm.
With STINT, on June 30, 2004 (report no.: 197) it was determined in an experiment, that the air pressure change compensation works in a range around 2000 m below sea level to a height of around 3600 m above sea level. For compensating such extreme height differences STINT must be switched on and off several times. If STINT is operated in his aquarium, the meniscus on the 1 mm thick antenna rod shows an upward and downward movement that is barely recognizable thanks to Huhn’s regulation. If a static depth control with vertical propeller is also activated – also an idea from old master Helmut Huhn – then the vibrations stops completely. STINT seems to be frozen.

Our joint project ARCHI was also launched in 2004.                                                                           ARCHI 1 shows the correct installation position of the piston tank can be found in jog mode.        ARCHI 2 is equipped with a Huhn regulation for 2 piston tanks. The pistons can be moved in the same or in opposite directions. A total of 677 operating hours have been counted until May 2020.   Both models have been seen at trade shows over and over again.

In 2007 the K 3, a boat under construction, also has received a control board for a double piston tank. The boat has a double propeller drive, which operated with a controller for tracked vehicles. The larger the rudder deflection is, the slower the motor on the inside of the curve turns, and it stops at half the deflection. If the rudder deflection is increased even further, the motor runs backwards proportionally up to full speed. When testing this drive in another model, it quickly became apparent that changes were still necessary; Helmut Huhn created a circuit that exchanged the two drive motors with a 4 x UM relay when reversing. The relay then sets the current path so that the right motor receives the current (and the direction of rotation) of the left motor and the revers is the case for the left motor. Although the K 3 has never got “really” wet, we are constantly improving this technology.

In 2011, the EX-U1 mode – a veteran with no real mole model, a 1992 Hein bout – got an Huhn static depth control. To not overload the pressure hull (derived from a rain pipe), the maximum depth switch (empty piston tank) was set to 2.2 m. All other functions are always available. To be able to dive again, the boat must moor and then get switched off and on again manually, using a magnet. By this means the piston tank can filled again.
In my early days, wild capers were the “normal” way of driving models, today the observation of the boat floating motionless under water is my declared goal.
    *
Finally, Helmut Huhn again: 23 g of water were shown in the diagram in the control window, while 30 g were described in the text. Because of this difference, the labeling was not changed again. In reality, this difference is negligible. My own 22 kg U 4 has a control window volume of 21.5 g. This was measured by me extra. So far, no change has been necessary. There are only a few actively regulated model submarines on the water, most of them either broken or sunk. Building a submarine model is a challenge, and there are many ways to lose it. The number of models that work over a long period of time is comprehensible.

Piston Tank - Depth Control (Paper by Wolfgang Baumann & Helmut Huhn) Empty Weitere Ausführungen zur stat. Tiefenregelung von Helmut Huhn. Further information on static depth control by Helmut Huhn

    Post  david f Sat Nov 14, 2020 1:41 pm

Further information on static depth control by Helmut Huhn provided by Hein.
Current revision from October 21th, 2020

After further thought about the Depth control, Huhn circuit - came some disillusionment!

The Huhn circuit, in which only the voltage part of the actual depth value controls the piston tank, only works if there is no displacement change  (perhaps caused by water ingress or the hull volume being reduced by increased pressure). So, if a displacement change is greater than half of the control range, the Huhn circuit fails. Has anyone spotted this?

This fact can also be determined with a correction that can be determined by the transmitter, showing how much displacement change has been, as was actually experienced with the STINT model  when water leaked in through a defective seal in 2009. For the reasons mentioned, the Huhn circuit is not foolproof . Perhaps out of instinct, some of my boats have a built in (adjustable) automatic ascent that empties the piston tank when it reaches a certain depth. In addition, the Huhn circuit only works with a high specification Huhn piston tank. This uses  a specialised ironless (bell) rotor), precision potentiometer  and  a smooth-running seal on the piston. The boat must be completely watertight with an incompressible hull.

When asked by a graduate physicist: "How does the Huhn piston tank motor cope when only small amounts of water has to be moved in regular operation? With their disadvantages such as breakaway torque, acceleration, friction, etc. ?” The answer is that with conventional control amplification, a target / actual difference circuit is adjusted with regard to the mass to be transported and positioned. (a PID circuit) Also when the model is propelled forward, dynamic forces from control surfaces can counteract static (buoyancy) forces.

My craft table board has the following connections:
Feed: 12 volts, water pressure input, piston tank: 5 pole-connection, depth ,
    5 Volt 0 / + output for receiver and 3 inputs for 1 - 2 ms ? receiver channels.
    Channel 1: Boat weight correction ± 25 g on the 0 to 100 scale
Channel 2: Manual down elevator, which is superimposed by the position sensor and the actual depth value on the circuit board from scale pos. 10 in automatic mode.

Channel 3: Potentiometer left stop (below 0) then 0 to 100.
Channel 3.1: Position of the left potentiometer stop = piston empty.
Channel 3.2: Position 0 to 10: = Move piston control to the center of the window. The pressure transmitter has no influence on the piston tank or the down elevator. (Manual operation)
Channel 3.3: From item 10: Activation of the stat. depth control and piston tank position on the edge of the window 10 g buoyancy. Piston tank and down elevator are also switched on. It is automatic mode
Channel 3.4: Position 18: The piston  begins to drive through the control window.
Channel 3.5: Position 20: Target depth value 0 (piston tank = window center) The down elevator also went through 0 with a different spread.
Channel 3.6: Position 22: The piston has been reduced to 10 g; all at 0 atm on the pressure transducer.
Channel 3.7: Position 40: 50 cm (target depth)
    Channel 3 Position 60: 100 cm ?
    Channel 3 Position 80: 150 cm ?
    Channel 3 Position 100: 175 cm

Position 20 is the target depth value 0
Position 40 is the target depth value for a depth of 0.5 m, whereby at a depth of 48 cm the piston begins to reduce the underdrive of 10 g. At a depth of 0.5 m, the piston tank is in the middle of the window.

At a depth of 1.5 m, the transmitter sends a signal of -3 to 0 volts at the amplifier output.
So 0 volts is at a depth of 1.5 m.
The voltage cutout above the control window is 0.2 volts ? ± 10g or approx. 5.2 mm piston stroke. Piston ø: = 70 mm. All approximate values. The 0.2 volts are in the middle above the target value when the boat is balanced and the filling quantity of the piston is correct. This can be changed to the nearest gram via the “Weight correction” input (channel 1) due to any temperature change in the water and thus a change in displacement of the boat. All of this is based on Baumann's oscillogram and my DIY board.

Einspeisung: 12 Volt, Eingang Wasserdruck, 5 pol. KT-Anschluss, Tiefenrudermaschine,

    3.1: Position linker Poti-Anschlag = KT leer.
    3.5: Position 20:   Tiefensollwert 0 (KT = Fenster-Mitte) Das Tiefenruder
    3.6: Position   40:  50 cm (Solltiefe)
    Position   60:   100 cm       ?
    Position   80:   150 cm        ?
    Position 100: 175 cm        ?

All dies sind ungefähre Werte.
