The conning tower of U-117...Herr Kapitain at the ready.
The skipper was connected to a float and also to the rudder linkage...when the boat was running on the surface in rough water, as the conning tower was swamped, the skipper would duck to avoid the water coming over the tower. As the boat turned, he would follow the turn, binoculars sweeping the horizon for those convoys!
