Models By Design Biber build up... Empty Models By Design Biber build up...

    Post  Tom(ADMIN) Tue Mar 29, 2011 3:57 pm

Well, I guess by now most of you will know that I've given up on the LA...I worked out(with the help of Nigel)that I'd never get it out of the door and down the stairs when it's completed, so it's now languishing on my bookcase(anyone want to buy a part built LA?)

Having given the next project some serious thought(over a few cups of Yorkshire's finest)I've decided that my new boat will be a Models By Design 'Biber' midget sub. I only know of three of these boats...Bernie Wood had one, Paul Cook has one and a friend of Andrew Gray also has one, so it's going to be an unusual sight at shows.

So, I called Andy at MBD and ordered the kit.

I also ordered an extra set of torpedo ends...the spare set will be going to Alfie Blake who is going to turn them into operational torpedoes, based on the ones he built for Dave Wright's Seehund midget sub, only mine won't be radio controlled, just straight running ones with a nose mounted cut off switch.

After a chat with Dave at Action Electronics, he came up with shopping list for me...an esc, power distribution board, ballast pump controller, motor, etc...so that was next thing to order. I also asked Dave for a wiring diagram, which I've reproduced below with Dave's permission..
Models By Design Biber build up... Untitl12

The prop shaft is being custom made for me by my tame engineer, it consists of a stainless steel outer tube, three internal bearings(one at either end and one centrally mounted)with O rings either side, and a 4mm stainless steel shaft. The tube will also have an external oiling tube fitted with a sprung cap to keep water out. My man is also making a watertight stuffing box and stub shaft, again all from stainless steel.

The scale 50mm 3 blade brass prop is on order from Raboesch, and with a bit of luck everything should be here by the weekend, or just after.

Here we go then...the first of the Biber stuff arrived just now. This is the electronics package from Action Electronics...I only ordered this lot yesterday afternoon!

Just the auto leveller to come, and that's the electronics sorted.

Prop arrived this morning...50mm 3 blade brass by Raboesch.

Thanks to Ramesh and Paul Holman, the leveller is sorted, hoping that the kit itself will arrive tomorrow.

Here's the completed drive train...12" tube with a 13" shaft, three internal bearings, two internal O ring oil seals, and the prop and the adaptor fitted. The adaptor takes the 5mm stub shaft from the wtc and connects it to the 4mm propshaft.

Just a quick update...spoke to Andy just now, he's just finishing off the torpedoes and then that's it. The kit will be collected by the courier tomorrow, and should be here Wednesday.

He's also in the process of redesigning the torpedoes, as the ones presently available are the wrong size apparently, so he's making up a mould in order to change them to a proper scale size. More news on that as and when they are done.

I must admit I'd never noticed that torpedoes were the wrong size/scale, but when compared to the full size version, you can see the differences.

To make mine operational means either :
    (a) leaving them off for now and waiting for Andy to produce the new versions, or
    (b) making some new end caps to scale size before sending them to Alf for modification to operational status, or
    (c) asking Alf very nicely to scratch build the whole things, or
    (d) use them as they are and to try and avoid embarrassing questions from the inevitable rivet counter brigade.

Another option has just occurred to me:

    (f) wait until Dave Wright is otherwise engaged(eating, talking, etc)and purloin the ones from his Seehund.

(maybe (f) is not an option to be considered.....)

Well, who's a silly boy then? I ordered a nice new length of acrylic tube for the wtc, and it arrived this morning. Great, I thought...until I placed it into the hull. I wanted a 90mm diameter tube...I'd only ordered a 70mm diameter tube. And I'd ordered the end caps from Paul H in the wrong size as well....doh!

Quick couple of phone calls, and all was sorted out, luckily Paul hadn't started the end caps, so at least that was ok. Anybody want to buy a 500mm length of 70mm diameter acrylic tube??

Yea, I know...I'm waiting for the derisive phone call from our esteemed chairman.

Building has commenced...the correct tube arrived this morning, so I've made a start on installing the elecronics in the wtc. So far, so good...it'll be a tight fit, but it will fit.

Pic shows some of the equipment laid out in position, still got the ballast pump to fit in yet. The battery pack will be going under the equipment tray, and just forward of the motor.

The ballast tank is to be made out of half round plastic guttering with a flat lid glued on, then a bag inside it. It should fit in under the tray, between the forward end cap and the two servos.

Results of a few hours work...the forward section of the equipment tray begins to take shape.
The wiring needs to be completed, then tidied up...and yes, I do know that the cardboard packing is still around the heat sinks on the ballast pump controller and the esc!

    It all fits...just.

The space to the rear of the motor is reserved for the two mini servos to actuate the torpedo release mechanisms.

I thought I'd have a look at the torpedoes, the ones that are supplied with the kit are 2" in diameter, which is way too small, so I managed to find a length of acrylic tube, 2 3/4" in diameter. This is a better size, but still 1/4" too small, but it does give an idea as to how they should look. They should be 3" in diameter, so I think a trip to B&Q is called for later today...

Sorry Richard but I am trying to work out the overall conclusion.

Has there been a "scale errror" with the torpedoes for this model in the past?

Correct David...I'm not sure about the original Darnell kit, but on the Models By Design one, the torpedoes are certainly out of scale. Andy does know this, and he will be making some proper sized ones in the very near future, so all future kits will have the correct sized ones supplied.

I emailed Rick at RPMTech yesterday to see if he would sell me a pair of his Neger torpedoes as a separate item, I thought they may be suitable for the Biber, but it turns out that they are 3.5" in diameter, which is a shame...they would have been ideal.

Pic belows shows Rick's Neger with torpedo attached.

So, I had another think...and came up with the idea of buying a couple of Trumpeter Seawolf plastic kits and grafting the ends onto a length of 3" plastic tube.

Pic below shows my Dragonfish alongside the Biber. Possibility, maybe?
