    MicroGyros... Empty MicroGyros...

    Post  Tom(ADMIN) Wed Nov 20, 2013 10:27 am

Now I know that we (the AMS) don't endorse any manufacturers, so this should be taken as a purely personal opinion.

I ordered a LiPo friendly esc from Mike at MicroGyros, within minutes I had an email from him describing what was going on with my order, and various methods of payment. Two days later (today) my esc arrived (with free postage) so I sent him a courtesy email thanking him for the quick delivery...minutes later I received a return email with all the set up instructions I'd need, (written in plain language and not techo-speak), wiring diagrams, and also a comment on how to set up my auto leveller properly (he'd seen a picture of my installation on the 'net)

The esc itself looks a superb piece of kit, very well made, and nice long flexible cables to allow easy installation in the cylinder. As soon as my hands settle down (I've been having a few bad days with both my hands and fingers) with I'll try it out and report back on how I got with it.

In my book, Mike offers super service and sells excellent products, and I recommend him to anyone contemplating the purchase of any electronic items for your boats.

    Check his website here: http://www.microgyros.com/

Remember, this is just my personal opinion as a satisfied customer.

Good to hear of your good experiences.
In the dim and distant past he was sometimes hard to contact.
One thing is that his ESC are not all designed to be waterproof. I had one of his dunked during my Resurgam escapade with the BBC. Though it recovered well after a good wash in distilled water (our tap water here is as good as) and a drying out.

Mtroniks ones are waterproof but last week I had one emit the "Holy Smoke" for no known reason.

I've heard some horror stories about Mtroniks esc's, mainly about the magic smoke escaping, sometimes with the dreaded flames as well. I've never had problems with them personally, I decided to change to MicroGyros purely for the excellent build quality and the much better prices. Plus of course, the superior after sales service...

Me and others suffered at the hands of the (now discontinued) Mtroniks' Marine-10. Seems a bad lot of this ESC got out the factory door a number of years ago. These things, when they failed, did so with much fanfare: shooting smoke and molten solder out the heat-fractured epoxy potting, and down the length of the input and output cables. Awful, awful stuff when it happened in the tight confines of a SubDriver!

    Here are the gory details:

Good grief David, that makes for horrific reading...no wonder people have changed their esc's. Maybe I've been lucky with mine, I only ever buy the ones that have been taken from the stock and given a full test before they get sold(at a reduced price).

I shall now be buying from Mike in future...

To be fair to Mtroniks, it was only that one batch of Marine-10's that were going sour. To their credit, soon after our correspondence with their technical representative, Steve, that product was pulled from the catalog and replaced with the ever-reliable Marine-15.

As I stated within that thread, I've installed, set-up, and ran hundreds of their ESC's with the only issue ever with Mtroniks being those damned Marine-10's. Otherwise, easy to use, easy to set-up, and reliable ESC's.

Viper 15's..that's the ones I used to buy, they were fine. I even ran one on a 12v pack of 2500ah cells running a much modified 540 race car motor in a Robbe Jet Ski...it got a bit warm, but apart from that it was fine.

The one that blew up last week was am Mtroniks M3 Sonic (No indication of amps - it came with the Type XXI, I was given - so may be quite old.)

Yes, Viper 15 I have used plenty of them with good results.

Are the Microgyro ones cheaper than Mtroniks ? (Mtroniks usually about £20 at shows.)

I've just paid £25 (free postage) for my FR40 (LiPo friendly) esc from Mike, so I guess it's much of a muchness, price wise.

I have not done a comparison yet between Mtroniks and Microgyro's ESC, but my servos on the Microgyro's esc are not chattering. Someday I plan on switching it out with one of the chattering systems and see if it cures the noisy interference.

I got two mtronics marine 25s and had nothing but issues with them. I know there 2nd hand but both did the same thing. notice that the on my other esc's had more power to the motor (nearly twice the speed). I know people like them but I lost faith. on to Mikes ESC and support smaller suppliers
