This is my much modified Darnell P class boat, built to represent HMCS(Her Majesty's Canadian Submarine)Onondaga(my girlfriend is Canadian, hence the link to her home country...)

Onondaga was the test boat for a unique dive system Bernie Wood designed, she had a 540 motor in a tube, dead centre of the hull, the idea being that the motor would drag the boat down. This was coupled to a modified R&R Engineering SALCON(Submarine Automatic Level Control)which controlled not only the rear planes(via a servo)but the speed controller for the dive motor...as the SALCON detected a change in the boat's attitude underwater, it would send a signal to the rear plane servo to correct the difference in level and also give the dive motor a short burst of power(either up or down)to keep the boat level.

It worked to a point, but the battery drain was horrendous, so after a while Onondaga was converted back to the more usual Darnell air system, and fitted with ex-tyre compressor instead of the little USE steam engine as an air pump.

With modern high performance, low drain motors and the advent of high output LiPo batteries, that dive system may be worth another attempt.

Onondaga only had a single 6volt 4a/h gel cell battery to run the two 380 drive motors, the 540 dive motor and all the radio equipment, and it didn't last long before it needed a recharge...if I remember correctly she would run for around ten minutes on a charge, but with modern day batteries and motors, it could be worth pursuing further.

    Food for thought, maybe...

Here's one of Nigel's photos of Onondaga in the pool at Plumpton Model Show...
