Here is a new waterproof digital servo by HiTec. This will hopefully work in submarines.

    HiTec Water-Proof Servos

HS-5646WP High Voltage, High Torque, Programmable Digital Waterproof Servo
    Part No: 35646S
Our new waterproof servos have what it takes to keep your radio control vehicle, airplane or robot watertight! With high torque, dual ball bearings and metal gears, our digital waterproof servos have the industry’s first IP67* rating ranking them among the most durable and reliable servos for wet conditions. Whether you are manning your power boat, bashing in the mud, directing your underwater robot, or water landing your 25% plane, the HS-5646WP will dependably keep your mind at ease.

Waterproof Servos - New Empty Re: Waterproof Servos - New

Let's hope so. I haven't had much joy with DIY waterproofed servos. Unless you can absolutely guarantee no leaks they represent a maintenance chore (You try them after several months and they have rusted etc.) Or you put them in a nice big, strong case and they don't fit anywhere! Slim commercial servos at a sensible price would be very welcome but still not for essential functions,in my opinion.

An interesting (and developing) thread over on Model Boat Mayhem about the waterproofing servo perennial:

    http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,49746.0.html

Servos seem to be developed as water proof but not PRESSURE proof which is what we need.

The consensus is (I think!) don't do it.

I've just checked and that Hitec servo is available for £27 on ebay which is not TOO expensive. It is IP67 rated which I think allows for a meter depth of water.

So it may be worth using them but I still wouldn't use them for anything critical (ballast control etc.)
