NiMh Battery Pack Empty NiMh Battery Pack

Post  ex docky Tue Aug 14, 2012 8:16 pm

    Hi,

I wish to use a 12v NiMh (sub c 5000 mAh) stick pack in my OTW S class. Does anyome have any ideas how to seal it?

I was planning to use glue backed heat shrink + silicone at the ends. What size tubing/layers/technique etc

    Thanks

On my Neptune I use a 6volt 800a/h nImhs pack to power the flashing led's ...there's no sealant, no shrink wrap, nothing...just five cells held together with a turn of insulating tape. The battery pack sits out in the flood area, held in place with a strip of Velcro.

It's been there like that for over a year, and has never given me a problem. When I think about it I'll give the terminals a wipe over with a drop of vaseline, but it's not very often.

    Works for me...

I have to say that I have no experience of using NiMHs (I only use lead acids (in water) and Lipos(in the dry))

Richard's method is interesting and seems to suggest that the idea is - NimH are OK in water but not when kept damp for long periods. So if you are going to use them wet let them drain and dry. If you are going to seal them make sure it really is sealed!

Sheerline in their later models use NiMHs in a sealed tube as a keel. A good principle in keeping the C of G low. Maybe someone with more experience of Sheerline subs could offer their experience of this?
