      I'm guessing it's of WW1 vintage?

It is actually the container that went on HMS Seraph as part of Operation 'Mincemeat'.

It contained the corpse of 'Major Martin' who was set adrift off the Spanish coast bearing secret, faked documents. It formed a significant and very successful deception operation which saved many lives in WW2.

(You may remember the story from the film "The Man who never was.")

The drawing is taken from a very interesting paperback "Operation Mincemeat" by Ben Mcintyre. Not much about submarines but you learn a lot about the origins of James Bond and Ping Pong! (There is a photo in the book of the designer of the "WTC" Charles Fraser Smith who looks exactly like (and was the basis for) the Q character in the Bond films.)
