    M 2 Underwater footage

Post  david f on Mon May 30, 2011 10:15 am

Some very good underwater footage of this in last nights "Britain's Secret Seas." (Episode 4 on BBC2 and now on i player for the next 7 days.)

(Much better vis in this then when I've dived on her!)

She's in surprisingly good condition considering she's been down there for what...80 years?

She is in very good condition thankfully. I was impressed to see that the top of her conning tower looks just as it did in the Newsreel footage.

And this is despite her being a popular dive site. It is good to see that divers are respecting her war grave status.

So, I take it from what the diver was saying, the remains of the crew are still onboard?

Yes. I think a couple of bodies were recovered from the hangar and this together with an open hangar door and an open hatch in the hangar led them to believe that they were trying to trim the time to launch, too much.

The hatches were all sealed and the pressure hull will stay intact for a long time. The lighter gauge deck plating was (as I recall) starting to corrode through.
